Muzik Kutusu
Holly Stell Interview

Dear Holly... We are delighted that we have the cutest and the sweetest singer in the world who astonish us with her extraordinary voice as our guest in Muzik Kutusu. Thank you for accepting our offer.

Are you also interested in other art branches like painting, sculpture or photography?

Although I don't actively participate in any of these activities, I think poetry and sculpting would be extremely fascinating.

A short while ago when we thought of cartoons, Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Road Runner with their beautiful classical music base, came to our minds. However, now war and violence show their face in such movies and children started to hear less and less of classical music. Do you agree? What, in your opinion, should be done to make classical music more appealing for them?

Yes, I agree. I think today's youth should give classical music a chance. It is so beautiful! It is important to know that what is on modern radio stations is not the only music that is out there and cool. I listen to many different styles of music. I like rock and R&B. Classical music is awesome to sing. I am sure if kids tried classical music they might feel the same. I just watched an 80's movie called "Heart and Souls" and it was really cool because it had different styles of music in it. I think to make classical music more appealing, kids like me who do perform classical music, need to not be afraid of what other kids think. I have to admit, sometimes I am nervous to sing classical in front of kids my own age!

Can you name the classical music composers whose work you admire the most?

Beethoven! I love the depth and passion of his compositions. Mozart! I love his Magic Flute! These composers were truely gifted artists and it shows.

You met Andrea Bocelli and you had the chance to perform a duet with him accompanied by a huge orchestra. The song “Go Where Love Goes” appear in both of your albums. What did you feel when you performed the duet? Can you tell us a little bit about that experience?

Andrea and I did not record the duet together. I first recored it as a solo when I was eleven years old in Berlin. It was with a sixty five piece orchestra and I was amazed because it was the first time I had even sung with an orchestra! I then found out I only had about fifteen minutes to actually record! When I finished recording, Ciro DiMacio, the films producer, gave me a big hug and said he loved the song and wanted it to be a duet with Andrea Bocelli. I finally met him about six months later when we sang the song for an iceskating special. He was very kind and it was such an honor to perform with him! It is still hard to believe it actually happened.

Some media introduce Holly Stell as the “little Pavarotti”. The world famous Italian opera artist Luciano Pavarotti, whom we know that you are also a fan of, performed in an opera at the age of 26. You are just 13 years old. This means you are 13 years ahead of great Pavarotti! Maybe it can be too early to ask this, but what kind of a future do you envision? Will you prefer to be acknowledged as a massive opera artist like Pavarotti, or will you blend your music with popular music like Sarah McLachlan and Lara Fabian?

It is wonderful to be nicknamed the "Petite Pavoratti". I would envision myself singing more contempoary types of music such as Sarah McLachlan and Lara Fabian, like you said before. I would definately stay in the classical field though. As far as actually becoming a true opera singer; that is hard to predict. I am only 13 and most women opera singers are 30 - 50, so I will just have to wait and see.

Are you going to concerts? If so, which was your favourite concert up to now and whose performance did you admire the most?

I went to a Hope Briggs concert. I totally admire her because she has passion, a killer soprano voice, and is fearless.

Are you interested in internet and technology? Do you have a digital music player?

I am interested in technology! I just purchased a laptop which I love to death! I don't have an iPod unfortunately, but I would love one!

Are you going to the movies? Which movie affected you the most?

I saw The Devil Wears Prada with my friend a couple of days ago. I loved it because it shows how fast you can be influenced by others and not even realize it. This movie taught me to stay who I am. Plus, both the acting and fashion is spectacular!

If the music did not run through your veins and if you did not have such a perfect voice, what kind of a profession would you choose instead?

Oh, thank you! I would have to say acting because it is so much fun when you have memorized the script and just get to lose yourself in a character for a few hours.

You worked with Turkish director Kaan Akalin for your video "Perfect Shades of Blue". This information was a surprise for us. The video reflects your beauty and pureness as well as its perfect accordance with the song itself. It is a really strong video. Can you tell us about the video shooting and what you felt when you first saw the last version of the video?

"Perfect Shades of Blue" was so much fun to shoot! It was my first video ever and I loved it. It was shot on a green screen and then Kaan added all of the beautiful images. He is so amazing. He has worked so hard and is very much appreciated by all of us. Hopefully there will be more to come!

You wrote the song "Annabelle Lee" for your album. It is really exciting to see that you have the gift of writing songs along with your wonderful voice and your priceless performance. The days that we will see you as a world star are just around the corner. We wish that your whole life will be as beautiful as your face and your voice, and that all the people you meet will be as pure as your heart.

Thank you so much! I have always loved writing songs because it allows me to incorporate my inner emotions with my outer ones. I am not taking any of this for granted because I know it could be gone tommorow. Thanks again!

Holly Stell
's first video "Perfect Shades of Blue" was
directed by Kaan Akalin. We asked him about Holly and the video...

1   While working with Holly Stell, which qualities of her mostly satisfied you?
Holly Stell is very poised for her age. I was very impressed at how maturely she handles herself in what I would assume would be intimidating situations even for adults.

2   As a person who both met and worked with Holly Stell, where do you expect to see her in the future?
Holly has already done remarkable things for someone so young and I think it is safe to expect that she will undoubtedly continue to grow over the years as a singer and an artist. I don't think I can say exactly what artistic directions we can expect her to travel, but it will guided by her own existing personal sensibilities and those influences she has around her as she continues to grow and discover the world.

3   Which technologies and software were used in the video "Perfect Shades of Blue"?
The footage of Holly was shot by cinematographer Nancy Schreiber in 24p High Definition video against a greenscreen in Los Angeles, CA. The source footage was transfered at Lenz Entertainment's HD editing facilities in Toronto, Canada. The CG environments, were created with the assistance of a small team of 3D artists assembled for the project, using industry-standard 3D animation and desktop 2D compositing software packages over the course of several months.
